Sir Joseph Banks, a notable English naturalist and botanist, played a significant role in shaping the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. He advised King George III on its development and sent botanists worldwide to collect plants. This effort led to Kew becoming the world’s premier botanical garden, with Banks credited for introducing 30,000 plant specimens and being the first European to document 1,400 of them.
In 1779, Banks acquired the Spring Grove estate, north of the London Road, Isleworth. This estate, known for its natural spring, came to be known as Spring Grove. Although his primary residence was at 32 Soho Square in Soho, London, he devoted considerable time and resources to this secondary home. He cultivated an acclaimed botanical marvel on this estate, largely with a variety of foreign plants collected during his extensive travels, particularly to Australia and the South Seas. He died at Spring Grove House, Isleworth, in 1820.
