Highclere Castle, known to many as the fictional Yorkshire country estate of Downton Abbey, has become a top destination in England, largely due to its starring role in the Emmy Award-winning television series and subsequent film adaptation. The series offers a captivating portrayal of the lives of the aristocratic Crawley family and their dedicated staff during the post-Edwardian period from 1912 to 1926.
In 2011, the area around Highclere was affectionately dubbed “Downtonia” by Tatler. The love affair with Highclere Castle continued and on 19 April 2021, it was announced that Downton Abbey would be returning to Highclere Castle for a second feature film.

Highclere Park holds the title as the earliest recorded estate in Hampshire, bequeathed to the Church of Winchester as a deer park in 749. The castle itself was erected in 1679, undergoing significant renovations in the 1840s. The park was designed by renowned landscape architect Capability Brown in the 18th century.
In 1907, the 5th Earl of Carnarvon, a passionate amateur Egyptologist, enlisted archaeologist Howard Carter to search for the tomb of Tutankhamun. By 1914, Lord Carnarvon secured the right to excavate in the Valley of the Kings. On 4 November 1922, their young water carrier inadvertently discovered the entrance to the tomb. In 2007, the Egyptian Exhibition was established in the castle’s cellars, telling the story of the discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb.
