The story of Goodwood dates back to 1936 when the hillclimb course at Goodwood House was first put to use. The racing circuit has its roots in the perimeter track of RAF Westhampnett airfield, built during World War II. The inaugural race meeting was held on 18 September 1948, organised by the Junior Car Club under the patronage of the Duke of Richmond and Gordon.
Prominent racers like Mike Hawthorn and Graham Hill had their first single-seat races on this very circuit. It was also here that Stirling Moss concluded his international career following his accident during the Glover Trophy.
Goodwood House, the centrepiece of the estate, was constructed around 1600 and later came under the ownership of Charles Lennox, the 1st Duke of Richmond, in 1697.
