The Wimbledon Championships, the most esteemed and oldest tennis tournament globally, unfolds over two weeks in late June and early July. Since its inception in 1877, this grand tournament has been hosted at the All England Club in Wimbledon. Every year, the tournament reaches its climax with the Ladies and Gentlemen’s Singles Finals, scheduled for the second Saturday and Sunday respectively.
The tournament is steeped in tradition, including a strict all-white dress code for competitors and royal patronage. The consumption of strawberries and cream is a customary practice at the tournament.
The Wimbledon Championships stand out for the absence of sponsor advertising around the courts, with the sole exceptions being Rolex and Robinsons barley water. In 2009, a retractable roof was installed on the Centre Court to minimize the disruption of play due to rain.
While its official title is “The Championships, Wimbledon”, the event is also referred to as “The All England Lawn Tennis Championships”, “The Wimbledon Championships”, or simply “Wimbledon”, depending on the sources.
